Met Éireann has issued a national yellow weather warning, with heavy rain forecast as well as a risk of thunder and localised flooding. The warning is in place until 9pm on Wednesday night.

Parts of the country have been left without electricity due to thunderstorms on Tuesday night. The ESB said there are currently 10,000 customers without electricity. It said "crews were mobilised at first light" on Wednesday, while there are still "considerable outages", particularly in the west and south.

Athenry in Co Galway was the worst affected, as 4,000 were left without power, followed by Tuam (1,500) and the Ballyhaunis area in Co Mayo (900).

While temperatures rose to into the 20s on Monday and Tuesday, Met Éireann said rainfall will be between 20mm-35mm in many areas on Wednesday.

Rainfall is due to gradually clear northeastwards through the course of the afternoon, with highest temperatures of 17-20 degrees.

Some showers will occur along Atlantic coasts during Wednesday night, with lowest temperatures of eight to 11 degrees.

While conditions are set to be dry in the eastern half of the country on Thursday morning, western showers will become more widespread by the afternoon. Some of the showers will be heavy with a risk of thunder. Thursday is set to be a cooler day compared with recent conditions, with highest temperatures of 14-17 degrees.

Further heavy showers and a continuing risk of thunder and localised flooding is forecast for Friday. The ESB said customers can follow updates on its website at esb.ie/esb-networks/powercheck. If a customer's power is out but that doesn't show on PowerCheck, ESB asks that they call 1850-372999 to report the outage.
