BRUSSELS - The European Commission yesterday approved 2 million ecus (£

1.5 million) of emergency humanitarian aid for the victims of flooding in the

Czech Republic and Poland. At the same time, Mr Hans Van den Broek, the commissioner for relations with eastern Europe, announced that 65 million ecus would be made available to help Poland repair damaged roads and bridges and telecommunications and energy networks.

Humanitarian Aid Commissioner, Ms Emma Bonino, said the aid would be used to fund emergency deliveries of food and clean drinking water to the worst-affected areas. Poland is to receive 1.4 million ecus with the balance going to the Czech
