The European Union observer group to Zambia's general elections has declared that the results of December polls do not represent the voters' wishes because of serious flaws.

"We are not confident that the declared results represent the wishes of the Zambian electors on polling day," said EU chief observer Mr Michael Meadowcroft in his final election report.

The opposition has disputed the controversial December 27 poll outcome, claiming massive rigging by the secret intelligence officials in favour of the governing Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD).

The MMD's Mr Levy Mwanawasa was declared winner of the presidential polls.
