Ex-RTÉ head appointed to NI equality body

A former director general of RTÉ is to take over at the head of Northern Ireland's Equality Commission.

A former director general of RTÉ is to take over at the head of Northern Ireland's Equality Commission.

It was confirmed today that Bob Collins will take over at the helm of the commission when Dame Joan Harbison completes her term of office on July 31st.

Mr Collins said today he was looking forward to his new role. "I believe equality of opportunity is crucially significant in building an inclusive society and I am committed to playing my part with the other commissioners and the staff in working for equality in Northern Ireland."

Mr Collins stood down as the director general of RTÉ in October 2003. He held a number of posts in the State broadcaster which he joined in 1975, including director of television and director of corporate affairs.
