NEWPORT - A British Tory Party defector, Mr Alan Howarth, yesterday won his bid to find a Labour sent before the general election, expected in early May. Mr Howarth, MP for Stratford-upon-Avon, bent three rivals seeking nomination for the Labour party in the ultra-safe South Wales seat of Newport East.
The Labour leader, Mr Tony Blair, described the outcome as "one of the most significant events in the three years since I became leader".
