The Examiner has appointed a new news editor to replace Mr Pascal Sheehy, who has returned to RTE. Ms Anne Cahill takes up the position shortly. The newspaper group has also appointed a new industrial relations officer, Ms Patsi Dunne, who is currently an official with the National Union of Journalists but is leaving to take up her new post.
Ms Cahill is one of the country's most successful freelance journalists. Her work has appeared in most Irish newspapers, including The Irish Times, as well as British newspapers.
She is a former chairwoman of the Irish Council of the National Union of Journalists and is married to Mr Vincent Kelly, who is news editor of the Cork Evening Echo. She began her journalistic career at the Connacht Tribune in Galway before going to the Irish Press.
Ms Dunne has worked for the NUJ for the past 26 years. She was responsible for negotiating agreements in the national and provincial newspaper sector as well as magazines and public relations. The Examiner came within her area of responsibility as a trade union official.
