A West African man wanted in the Netherlands where he is accused of trafficking children from Africa to Europe where they are used as prostitutes has been remanded in custody by the High Court.
Peter Kwame Sarfo, aka Jackson Smith (38), is wanted by the Dutch authorities who claim he is involved in the movement of children from Nigeria into a number of western Europe nations.
It is claimed the children are initially brought into the Netherlands and then sent on to other countries including Italy and Spain to work as prostitutes. Yesterday, Mr Justice Michael Peart agreed to adjourn the matter for a week to allow Mr Sarfo's lawyers study certain documents.
Noting that Mr Sarfo has lodged his points of objection to an order for his extradition, the judge said he intended to fix a date for the extradition hearing when the matter next comes before him. He also remanded Mr Sarfo in custody to Cloverhill Prison.
In earlier proceedings, the judge was told that, following his arrest last month and caution by gardaí, the man had initially denied he was either Peter Kwame Sarfo or Jackson Smith but subsequently told gardaí: "I am Jackson Smith." When the charges contained in the warrant seeking his extradition were put to him, the court heard that he had told gardaí: "I know nothing about this." The man has claimed he is from the west African nation of Sierra Leone and not from Ghana.
