THE death of a Co Armagh farmer who was kicked by a bullock was described as being relatively uncommon in Northern Ireland yesterday. Mr Arnold Reid (69), of Achalee, received a powerful blow in the stomach when the animal lashed out as he was passing a cubicle in a cattle shed last March. He died from gangrene in hospital three days later as a result of the kick, which necessitated the amputation of his left leg, his inquest heard yesterday.
A consultant surgeon at the City Hospital in Belfast, Mr M.J.G. O'Reilly, said he knew of only one similar case, in England four years ago. The Belfast coroner, Mr John Leckey, said the incident underlined that farming as full of hazards.
