Four units of the fire brigade have extinguished a large fire behind a shopping centre in Westmeath

Four units of the fire brigade have extinguished a large fire behind a shopping centre in Westmeath

Gardaí said the blaze broke out in a breaker's yard close to the Fairgreen Shopping Centre in Mullingar shortly before 3pm this afternoon.

No one was hurt in the fire, but a number of cars were destroyed.

A forensic examination will be carried out to establish the cause of the blaze.

Grand Parade was closed to traffic for a time, but has since reopened.
