Five people were killed in crashes on roads around the country at the weekend. The deaths involved three pedestrians and two people in separate single-vehicle collisions.

A 24-year-old Polish man died when the car in which he was a front-seat passenger struck a tree near Kenmare in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The accident occurred at a bad bend, two miles from Kenmare on the Kenmare to Bonane and Glengarriff road.

The driver, who is also Polish and in his 20s, was taken to Kerry General Hospital where his injuries are said to serious but not life-threatening.

The young man who died had been working for some time in construction in the Kenmare area and both he and the driver were on their way home at the time of the accident, around 3.30 am.

They were living in a rented house just yards from where the accident occurred.

The car was destroyed by the force of the impact.

Local Garda Supt Michael O'Donovan said detailed examinations of the scene were being carried out yesterday. He said they were contacting the dead man's relatives in Poland and would not yet release his name.

In a second one-vehicle incident, a 31-year-old woman died after her car crashed into a tree in Co Meath.

The woman was driving the car in the early hours of Sunday morning when it went out of control and crashed into a tree at Mooretown, Kentstown Road, Navan. No other vehicle was involved.

The collision was discovered by a passing motorist shortly before 2.30am.

Gardaí and the Fire Service were called to the scene to assist in freeing her from the car and she was taken to Our Lady's Hospital in Navan, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

On Saturday three pedestrians were killed on the roads, including a teenager in Co Down.

The young man died when he was hit by a bus on West Street in Newtownards shortly before 9pm. Last night, the Police Service of Northern Ireland had not released his name, but appealed for witnesses to the accident to come forward.

In Dublin, a 78-year-old pedestrian died after a road traffic collision in Monkstown.

The man was hit by a car at the roundabout at the junction of Abbey Road and Stradbrook Road shortly after 5pm on Saturday.

He was rushed to St Vincent's University Hospital with serious injuries and died there shortly before midnight.

Gardaí from Kill-O-The-Grange Garda Station are investigating and have appealed for witnesses to contact them.

A man in his 60s died when he was hit by a car in Cork. The collision happened around 6.30pm on Saturday evening at the Midleton to Youghal Road (N25) at Curragrine, close to Castlemartyr.

Gardaí and an ambulance crew attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The area was sealed off for technical examination and gardaí at Midleton Garda Station appealed for anyone who witnessed the collision to contact them.

Meanwhile, gardaí in Arklow, Co Wicklow, have appealed for witnesses to a collision that happened in the town in the small hours of Friday morning.

Daniel McDonnell (21) from Arklow was killed when he was struck by a car on Main Street. Gardaí have asked anyone who was in the area between midnight and 3am to contact them.

The weekend's accidents bring the total for people killed on Irish roads this year to 40, including eight in Northern Ireland.
