Four teenagers and a 24-year-old man, each charged with the rape of a woman in her 30s in Cratloe Wood, Co Clare, last Friday, were further remanded in custody yesterday.

Last Friday night, the five accused, aged 24, 16, two aged 15 and a 14-year-old, appeared before Ennis District Court in connection with the alleged multiple rape of the woman on Friday morning at Cratloe Wood.

The five are also charged with the false imprisonment of the male partner of the woman, and stealing car keys, a wallet and a mobile phone to the overall value of €250 from the same man at Cratloe.

Gardaí last Friday successfully objected to bail for the five after Insp Kennedy said the four teenagers were on bail on other matters at the time of the incident.

Insp Kennedy said he was objecting to bail for the 24-year-old as he had failed to turn up in court on three previous occasions. He also said that parental or guardian control was non-existent.

At Kilrush District Court yesterday, the five appeared once more. The hearing lasted less than two minutes, where the application for bail for the accused by solicitor Mr Ted McCarthy was not renewed.

Insp Kennedy told Judge Joseph Mangan that the cases could be adjourned by consent to February 20th to Ennis District Court.

The 14-year-old and one of the 15-year-olds were remanded to Trinity House in Dublin. The second 15-year-old is considered "unruly", and was remanded to St Patrick's Institution. The 16-year-old was also remanded to St Patrick's Institution, while the 24-year-old was remanded to Limerick Prison.
