Property developer Patrick Gallagher was a "flamboyant and remarkable character", the congregation at his funeral Mass in Dublin heard yesterday.
Mr Gallagher had a difficult life but one that was full of adventure, Fr Thomas Kennedy said in the Church of the Assumption in Booterstown Avenue.
Fr Kennedy said those who knew Mr Gallagher and those who had heard about him "could not help but be struck by this remarkable life in our midst".
Many people had gathered from the parish and the city, and beyond, to be with Mr Gallagher's family at the Mass, Fr Kennedy said.
The mourners were led by his Mr Gallagher's partner, Yvonne D'Arcy, his former wife, Susan Craigie, his sons Matthew and Patrick, his brother Paul, sisters Delia, Maureen and Cathy, and nieces and nephews.
There was a large turnout from the property development and construction sector as well as the business sector generally.
Among those present from the property sector were Joe McGowan; Tom Brennan; Seán Dunne and his wife, Gayle; Charlie Kenny and Greg McCambridge.
Also present were architect Sam Stephenson; entrepreneur Ulick McEvaddy; banker John Bourke; former finance director of the Gallagher group, John Cousins; solicitor Ivor Fitzpatrick; and former managing director of the Irish Permanent, Ed Farrell.
In 1974 Mr Gallagher, who was then 22 years old, took charge of the Gallagher property group upon the death of his father, Matt. He was one of the most high profile and controversial business figures in the State during the 1970s.
Following the Mass, Mr Gallagher's burial took place at Three-Mile-Water cemetery, Co Wicklow.
