Fletcher expects Hernandez to shine

Soccer: Darren Fletcher is expecting Javier Hernandez to do great things for Manchester United

Soccer:Darren Fletcher is expecting Javier Hernandez to do great things for Manchester United. A relative unknown when he agreed to join United in a €8.5 million deal from Chivas earlier this year, the Mexican has made an instant impact with the Red Devils.

Goals for and against his new club on their pre-season tour of North America hinted at a star in the making and, although his effort in the Community Shield was unconventional as he booted the ball in via a deflection off his face, it took away the pressure of trying to score a goal in recognised combat.

Although Hernandez's chances have been restricted, he proved to be the match-winner in Valencia last night when he struck five minutes from the end to give United a rare Champions League victory in Spain.

Fletcher anticipates there is more to come from the 22-year-old.

"Javier got his head down and finished it fantastically," said the Scotland captain. "He showed he is going to be a great player for Manchester United.

"He is young and still getting used to the way we play. But he has come in from Mexico and is a real talent."

Hernandez's efforts highlighted the fact United are no longer reliant on Wayne Rooney, who could be missing for three weeks with an ankle injury that was assessed in Manchester yesterday.

It also made amends for a drab opening-day draw with Rangers at Old Trafford a fortnight ago.

Now they are back in a more customary position at the head of affairs in Group C, if only in alphabetical order given they have exactly the same goal difference as Rangers.

That should change now they have back-to-back meetings with Turkish champions Bursaspor - who have yet to collect a point - to look forward to next month.

"We are back in a good position," said Fletcher. "We were disappointed to draw at home to Rangers and we knew going to Valencia was going to be difficult.

"But we got three points to put us back top of the group.

"The target is always 10 points. That is what it remains."
