Northern Ireland has continued to experience some of the worst October weather for years with landslides wreaking havoc on the roads and householders erecting flood defences in vain efforts to keep the water out.
After days of heavy rain, the Met Office in Northern Ireland warned it was being followed by gales strong enough to cause structural damage.
Some of the worst flooding was in Newcastle, Co Down, where a combination of water flowing off the Mountains of Mourne and a high tide left houses flooded by up to two feet of water.
The coast road south of the town was blocked by mudslides in a number of places, as was the coast road north of the ferry port town of Larne, Co Antrim.
In Belfast a 30 feet stretch of road collapsed when an underground culvert gave way due to the pressure of water.
There were numerous reports of flooded roads across Northern Ireland.
The authorities came under severe criticism for their failure to provide enough sandbags to prevent extensive damage to homes in Newcastle.
