French President Jacques Chirac arrived in Saint Petersburg today to take part in a three-nation summit with Russian and German leaders on the postwar situation in Iraq.

Mr Chirac was due to hold bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin before taking part in a three-way meeting with Mr Putin and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder expected to focus on the situation in Iraq following the collapse of Saddam Hussein's regime.

Mr Putin and Mr Schroeder were already engaged in bilateral talks as part of an annual Russo-German summit.

The three leaders were due to speak to reporters and then have dinner together.

The summit concludes on Saturday.
