Paris - France stepped up patrols around synagogues yesterday and other Jewish buildings after another spate of attacks overnight provoked by the spiralling violence in the Middle East.

As community leaders appealed for calm, Interior Minister Mr Daniel Vaillant said security, tightened already for the Yom Kippur Jewish festival on Monday, would be "reinforced further" and about 1,000 extra police were drafted in.

Thursday night's attacks followed a pattern set over the last week, with unknown assailants hurling Molotov cocktails at two synagogues and a Jewish school in the Paris area and at a community centre in Toulouse.
