A man who defrauded a Cork company director of €54,600 through "a deal too good to be true" has been given a year by Judge Desmond Hogan at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to gather €60,000 compensation.
James O'Gorman (34), of Maplewood Park, Tallaght, had been convicted by a jury in March of defrauding James Crowley of Autopoint Rally Sport Ltd, Ballincollig, of the money almost seven years ago.
The jury of seven men and four women took just over two hours to convict O'Gorman of dishonestly obtaining Ir£43,000 (€54,600) from Mr Crowley at Moynihan Court in Tallaght on May 10th, 2000.
O'Gorman had pleaded not guilty to falsely purporting that he would change the money into Sterling at an exchange rate significantly more favourable than that offered by banks.
Pat Russell BL, defending O'Gorman, said his client accepted the verdict of the jury and wished to make restitution in the order of €60,000 to Mr Crowley. He said he had €10,000 in cash in court and would need a year to gather the balance of €50,000.
Judge Desmond Hogan said he felt it would be "premature" to finalise a sentence before O'Gorman had a chance to gather the full compensation he had offered to Mr Crowley and adjourned sentencing to next May.
He warned O'Gorman that he should have the full amount in court on that day as he would not adjourn sentencing again and would not tolerate a "drip-feed of compensation".
