Paris - French Jewish leaders have asked the government to consider sending the army to protect synagogues if a wave of anti-Jewish violence continues, a community leader said yesterday.

Mr Moise Cohen, president of Paris's Jewish religious board, said: "We asked that if the situation worsened, the army could be called in to protect synagogues."

Synagogues and other Jewish targets in France have been attacked with petrol-bombs.
