Paris - The French government defended its record yesterday on dealing with a mounting refugee dispute with Britain and said cross-Channel bickering would not solve Europe's immigration problem.

The Labour Minister, Ms Elisabeth Guigou, said France was not to blame for Britain's immigration woes and was not lax in allowing 1,500 refugees to stay in a camp near the Channel Tunnel, through which many sneak into Britain.
