A nurse charged with assaulting two patients, one of whom died, at Naas General Hospital last year has been remanded on continuing bail until October.

Ms Noreen Mulholland (33), Runabeg Close, Kildare is facing two counts of assault causing harm and two counts of recklessly administering to patients a substance which she knew to be capable of interfering substantially with their bodily functions.

The crimes were alleged to have taken place at Naas hospital on March 1st, 2003, and June 18th-19th, 2003, against Mr John Gethings and Mr Séamus Doherty respectively.

Mr Gethings died at Naas hospital on March 1st, 2003.

Members of his family were in Naas District Court, along with the accused, for yesterday's remand hearing.

Judge Murrough Connellan was told that the book of evidence was not yet ready, and he remanded Ms Mulholland by consent on continuing bail until October 13th when the book of evidence is due to be served.

At a previous hearing, the court was told that Ms Mulholland now lived in Northern Ireland, and was not working at present.

She had been employed at Naas hospital through an agency for a period of six months.
