CUTTACK, India - The ashes of Mahatma Gandhi, forgotten in a bank vault for nearly 50 years, were handed over to his great-grandson yesterday for ritualistic Hindu funeral rites.

Mr Tushar Gandhi, who fought a two-year court battle to get the ashes, was handed a sealed box carrying an urn in the eastern city of Cuttack. Hundreds gathered outside the bank to have a glance at the urn, chanting "Mahatma Gandhi amar rahe" (May Mahatma Gandhi be immortal).
