Gardaí in Co Wicklow are investigating the alleged rape of a 14-year-old girl at the weekend.
Supt Tom Finlay, of Gorey, who is leading the investigation, confirmed yesterday an investigation was under way into the alleged rape of the girl in Arklow on Saturday afternoon.
"A complaint was made at Arklow Garda station early Saturday afternoon. Some friends of the girl came in first, and she came in some time later in a distressed state in the company of her parents."
The girl was medically examined, and was due to be interviewed by two female gardaí yesterday evening.
The alleged rape is said to have occurred in a lane known as Coomey Lane, behind St Saviour's church. It was sealed off and examined by forensics experts at the weekend.
