Armed gardaí have arrested five men after foiling an attempted armed robbery in south Co Dublin last night.
The men were arrested when gardaí from the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, in a joint operation with local gardaí, prevented a robbery of Chronicle bookmakers in Deansgrange at around 8.30pm.
It is understood a number of items, including a handgun, were recovered. No shots were fired during the attempted robbery. They are being held under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act and can be held for 72 hours.
Two men are being held at Shankill Garda Station, two in Dun Laoghaire and a fifth is in custody in Blackrock.
Elsewhere, gardaí in Cabra are investigating the aggravated robbery of a bookmaker in the Kinvara estate near the Navan Road in Dublin. It is understood that two men laid in wait for the man as he came home from the Fairyhouse racecourse last night.
They made away with what is believed to be a six-figure sum after holding the man's wife hostage.
Gardaí are seeking two men, who were believed to be in their twenties and dressed in dark clothes.
