Limerick gardaí investigating the killing of a 21-year-old man in Moyross last night believe the shooting may have been part of a feud between rival gangs in the city.
Frankie Ryan, with an address Moyross, was shot at about 10.45pm as he sat in a car
at Pineview Gardens. Another man who was in the car at the time of shooting escaped on foot. Mr Ryan was known to gardaí.
His body was examined at the scene by the State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy before being removed this evening to Mid-Western Regional Hospital for a post-mortem examination
Earlier today an 18-year-old man was arrested on near Moyross and is being questioned under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act in Mayorstone Garda Station. Minister for Justice Michael McDowell today promised 24-hour policing for the estate.
The Minister said he had spoken with the Garda Commissioner and said that "funding was not the issue and he should deploy his resources as he sees appropriate.
"He has done so and drafted in extra resources into Moyross. They will get a full-time Garda presence until all of this ends," Mr McDowell added.
Mr McDowell also denied that crime was out of control in Limerick and praised gardaí on their record on fighting crime in the city.
"The gardaí in Limerick have a very good record in dealing with the problems that have emerged there and have a high detection rate for serious crime," he said.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or have information to contact them at Mayorstone on 061-456980.
