Gardaí investigate Sligo assault

A 49-year-old man has been taken to hospital following a serious assault in Sligo town last night.

A 49-year-old man has been taken to hospital following a serious assault in Sligo town last night.

The incident happened between 6 and 7pm on a walkway connecting Stevens Street car park and Rockwood Parade.

Gardaí said they believe the victim was in the company of another man when a dispute broke out.

The victim was taken to Sligo General Hospital suffering from head injuries but later transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where he is described as being in a serious condition.

Gardaí are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time of the assault and witnesses are asked to contact Sligo Garda station on 071– 9157000, the Garda confidential telephone line 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

The scene has reopened following a Garda technical examination.
