Gardaí in Cork yesterday issued a fresh appeal for the mother of an abandoned baby girl to come forward and be reunited with her now three-month-old child.
An image of baby Sophia, who was abandoned on the grounds of South Infirmary Hospital on October 13th, was distributed through the media last October. The baby girl was discovered in a blue sports bag found lying on the boot of a car. Efforts to identify the mother have so far failed. Gardaí have promised the matter will be dealt with in the strictest confidence.
In recent weeks detectives have examined closed-circuit TV footage which show a woman entering the car-park with the bag on her shoulder and leaving shortly afterwards without it. Gardaí estimate the woman to be 5ft 4in to 5ft 8in, with a slim build and to have been wearing a grey tracksuit top with grey or blue slacks.
