Gardaí have named the man whose beaten body was found yesterday morning in Athlone as Michael Philip Chambers (51).
It is understood Mr Chambers, who was from Portadown, was on his way home when he stopped off at the midlands town on Sunday evening.
He was seen at several locations on Sunday night. His body was discovered yesterday morning and a post-mortem revealed he had been struck repeatedly on the head.
Gardai have begun a murder inquiry and have appealed to the public for help.
