Gardai are this evening questioning a man in connection with a fatal hit-and-run in Co Kildare in the early hours of the morning.

A 49-year-old man died in the incident which is thought to have happened at around 1 a.m. outside Kildare town. The victim's body was discovered at around 7.50 a.m. on the Curragh. He is believed to have suffered serious head injuries.

The road between Kildare and Newbridge was closed for most of the day as the scene was preserved.

Gardaí are asking for anyone who was on the road between 12:45 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. to contact the Kildare Garda Station.

The name of the victim -  a native of Kilkenny -  has not been released. He is thought to have worked at a stables near where he died.
