Gardaí are seeking witnesses to an incident in which a man died after entering the Royal Canal in Dublin’s north inner city on Saturday morning.

The deceased was with a group of people when he entered the water at 6.30am at Ballybough Bridge.

Some of the people he was with went into the water to try to save him but were unable to do so.

The emergency services were called and the 22-year-old was taken from the water and brought to the Mater hospital. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

Gardaí have appealed for anyone who was with the man or in the area around the time of the incident to contact them at Fitzgibbon Street station on 01-6668400.
