Gardaí are still waiting to interview the driver of a Northern Ireland-registered BMW car involved in a fatal crash on the N21 near Castleisland, Co Kerry, on Sunday morning.

Two Polish motorcyclists in their 20s, returning to their ferry at Dublin from a Harley-Davidson rally in Killarney, were killed when their bikes collided with a car coming in the opposite direction near a slight bend at about 6am on Sunday.

Gardaí described the accident as one of the worst scenes they and emergency personnel had ever encountered. The two men died instantly. The BMW driver, who is from the Knocknagoshel area, remains in a stable condition at Kerry General Hospital in Tralee. His injuries are thought not to be life-threatening.

A spokeswoman for the Polish embassy said it had contacted the victims' families and arrangements were being made to repatriate the bodies. The victims' names have not been released.
