Gardaí in Co Mayo are trying to trace two flatmates of a middle-aged Polish construction worker whose body was found in Castlebar, Co Mayo, on Friday.

Supt John Quirke, who is heading the investigation into the death of the 50-year-old, said the two men, both believed to be Polish, had been staying with the deceased sometime last month at an apartment building in Saleen, on the outskirts of Castlebar.

"We are anxious to talk to these two men as they may be able to provide useful information," Supt Quirke said. He added that tests carried out last weekend by State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy to try to determine the cause of death had so far proved "inconclusive".

"Further tests will be required and some of these tests will take time," Supt Quirke stated. The man's partially decomposed body was found on Friday on open ground close to the apartment block where he had been staying. There were some marks on the body, according to gardaí, but these were not extensive.

Gardaí have a name for the dead man, and have made contact with the Polish embassy and Interpol to trace his family and relatives in Poland. A British-based forensic entomologist flew in at the weekend to conduct an examination of the body.
