Gardaí in Loughrea, Co Galway, have visited Independent councillor Michael "Stroke" Fahy, at a nursing home in the county following his discharge from hospital.

Gardaí are reported to have arrived at the nursing home shortly before 8pm yesterday but left without Cllr Fahy.

Cllr Fahy (56) is due to serve a one-year jail term for fraud and attempted theft. He was discharged from University College Hospital Galway on Monday after an operation last week to insert a stent into an artery.

He was admitted to hospital on April 2nd, the evening before he was due to present himself at Loughrea Garda station after his conviction last month.

The former Fianna Fáil councillor was given a 12-month jail sentence and fined €75,000 for fraud and attempted theft from Galway County Council.
