I am thrilled that Wicklow Town has been chosen to be this year's Healthy Town as we believe it is a wonderful initiative to get the whole town thinking about their health.
I would encourage the people of Wicklow to show their support and participate in the programme as much as they can to help improve our town’s health.
Wicklow is an ideal location for this project: it now has a new Port Road with five miles of cycle lanes which are well lit up . This enables the people of Wicklow and the surrounding area to walk , jog , run and cycle in complete safety morning , noon and night.
The bay is beautiful with very active swimming , rowing and sailing clubs.
And of course Wicklow has plenty of gymnasiums, an indoor swimming pool and a huge number of sporting orgnaisations including GAA, soccer, ruby, athletics clubs.
I am very excited about all the activities that are planned in the town over the next 8 weeks I myself, am a keen sportsman and am planning a number of mayoral walks for all ages.
I am also working on a 10k fun run for all ages.
I would like to thank The Irish Times and Pfizer Healthcare for giving Wicklow town this opportunity.
