US:The heiress Paris Hilton (26) was released from jail yesterday after serving just three days of a three-week term, but was confined to her home with an electronic ankle bracelet for 40 days, swapping a 3m by 2m cell for her Beverly Hills mansion.
Citing unspecified medical reasons, a spokesman for the Los Angeles county sheriff's department said that following "extensive consultations with medical personnel" she had been given a "community-based alternative to custody".
"She has been given the same treatment that any other rich and famous person would get," said Laurie Levenson, a professor at the Loyola law school, in Los Angeles.
"She obviously feels she's above the law and this confirms that she obviously is," Michael Musto, a Village Voice columnist, said. "Her sentence went from 45 days to 'just spend a bit of time in your luxury villa'."
