Gardaí investigating an alleged conspiracy to kill three people in Cork have extended their detention of a former public representative arrested in connection with the investigation.
The man was arrested on Thursday under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act which allows gardaí to detain a suspect for up to seven days before they must be released or charged.
After the first 48 hours gardaí have to go to court to obtain an order from a judge for an extension of 72 hours if they wish to continue questioning a suspect.
Gardaí went to Cork District Court this morning at about 9am and obtained such an extension allowing them to continue questioning the man suspected of seeking to hire a hitman for a further period.
He is being held at Gurranebraher Garda station where gardaí are questioning him about an alleged conspiracy to kill a garda, aRevenue official and an accountant.
