Members of Sinn Féin dismantled one of three suspect devices which were left outside three homes in Derry on Sunday night.

Former Sinn Féin Assembly woman Ms Mary Nelis called in local republicans rather than the police or British army when a device was found on the doorstep of her Westland Avenue home in the Bogside area.

In nearby Meenan Drive, police officers and soldiers had stones and petrol bombs thrown at them after a controlled explosion was carried out on a suspect package in the front garden of the home of SDLP Assembly man Mr Pat Ramsey.

A controlled explosion was also carried out on a device found by members of the Protestant Interface Network in the loyalist Fountain Estate, less than half a mile from the Bogside alerts.

Ms Nelis said the hoax bomb outside her home contained electrical parts and talcum power.

"It was frightening for us and frightening for the neighbours, but rather than have the life of the street disrupted by the juvenile activities of a group of small-minded people, I contacted members of the republican movement, who dealt with it."
