A giant Hollwood-style sign has been erected on a hill overlooking the Co Kerry town of An Daingean. The sign proclaims the town's name as the anglicised Dingle.
The erection of the sign follows a long-running controversy over the town's official name changing to An Daingean on maps and road signs last March as a result of the Placenames (Ceanntair Ghaeltachta) Order of the Official Languages Act.
The name An Daingean was chosen by the Placenames Commission when it ruled on names for 2,300 Gaeltacht areas two years ago.
However, a local artist said Dingle was "a world brand name", just like Hollywood and the name change was a waste of money. Darryl Courtney, who erected the lettering at Cnoc an Chairn, said the Hollywood dimension had struck him last year before the name change as it was a town with a strong international brand name.
Gardaí said the white wooden sign has most likely been erected on commonage and they are not investigating it.
However, all signs in Kerry require planning permission and thesign is likely to be dismantled today.
