If in doubt, keep it very simple. In a nutshell: Chardonnay (either white Burgundy or New World) to start with; then Shiraz/Syrah or a Rhone blend for the bird.
This may not be the best moment to uncork your best bottles. If you have small children/endless relatives/family tensions/ Santaesque sleep deprivation, you'll be too fraught to enjoy them - and so may everybody else.
