Impact of new ring road has yet to be fully felt

There is not much awareness about the Monkstown Ring Road - probably because it doesn't yet fully exist. Even the sections of it which have been completed consist mainly of existing roads.

At present, the Monkstown Ring Road runs into a cul de sac at Fleurville, a relatively new housing estate off Carysfort Avenue. Its residents oppose the plan to complete it, fearing more traffic.

Residents of Yankee Terrace, whose cottages are the only buildings still standing in the way, have complained that they cannot sell their houses because of the road scheme. However, they have not campaigned against it.

The position of Yankee Terrace is analogous to that of Arran Quay Terrace, in the city centre, where the houses would be demolished to make way for the Luas light rail. By contrast, these occupants have been extremely vocal.

The final stretch of the Monkstown Ring Road would also take some land from the grounds of Newpark Comprehensive School. From there, it would link up with an already completed section of new road at Brookville, off Dean's Grange Road.

In general, people living along the route object to its completion, while those living elsewhere - such as Newtown Park Avenue - are in favour as they feel it will relieve their areas of huge volumes of commuter traffic.

The Monkstown Ring Road is also seen as part of an "umbilical cord" running east-west via Goatstown and Dundrum to Lower Rathfarnham, which helps to unite Dun Laoghaire with its vast hinterland.
