Employers in Dublin are being warned that they will be fined and prosecuted if they continue to allow smokers to drop cigarette butts outside their premises, writes Alison Healy.

Before the workplace smoking ban was introduced in March 2004, cigarette butts and their associated litter accounted for 60 per cent of litter in the State.

Bernadette Lillis, Dublin City Council's anti-litter officer, said: "People don't realise that putting a cigarette out on the street is littering, and when they are caught they will say 'I don't litter, I recycle, I do everything right, I have a compost bin in the garden,' but it's still a litter offence."

Dublin City Council has already started to clamp down on motorists who throw cigarette butts out of car windows.

Last year, the council issued 212 fines of €125 each.
