Road collisions claim another two lives

An elderly man and woman died yesterday following separate road collisions, bringing to 173 the number of fatalities on Irish roads this year.

A woman passenger in a car who was in her 80s died after a collision with a mini- bus yesterday at Ardagh, Ballyliffin in Co Donegal. She was pronounced dead at the scene.The male bus driver was removed to Letterkenny General Hospital suffering from minor injuries.

Meanwhile, gardaí in Granard were last night investigating a fatal collision at Searmore, Co Westmeath at 5.35pm.

A man in his 90s died when his car and a JCB collided. His body was later removed to Mullingar Regional Hospital.

Gardaí in Kanturk, Co Cork, have named the victim of a single vehicle accident on Thursday night on the Mallow to Killarney road as Dermot Murphy (20) of Clara Road, Millstreet, Co Cork.

35 jobs lost as Leitrim mill closes

Some 35 sawmill workers in Leitrim were made redundant yesterday when a timber plant closed. Production was ended and work transferred from Balcas at Newtowngore to the firm's main plant in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh.

Balcas makes construction timber, fencing products, pallets and wood pellets. It also has a plant in Estonia and an architectural mouldings factory in Kildare. The business in Newtowngore was acquired by Balcas from AS Richardson Ltd in 1995.

Shell appoints deputy director

Shell E&P Ireland has appointed Terry Nolan as deputy managing director.

Mr Nolan, who will be based in Mayo, joined Shell International in 1978, and has worked in various technical and management roles in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

In a separate development Bord Pleanála has apologised for a typographical error in its June 1st ruling on the Corrib project. The appeals board found three works on shore were unauthorised, but has now said one is exempted development. Its ruling had stated that a beach valve facility at the pipeline landfall was unauthorised and required planning permission. But it says there was inadvertent inclusion in the order of the word "not" and the facility does not need planning permission.
