Fire in Dublin docklands still burning

A fire at the R&H Hall warehouse on Alexandra Road in Dublin's docklands was still burning last night, four days after the initial outbreak, writes Tim O'Brien.

Smoke filled the immediate area and Dublin Port police closed off nearby roads but Dublin Fire Brigade said the risk to the adjacent oil terminal had been minimised.

After the initial fire was detected on Monday night fire officers brought it under control by Wednesday. At one point eight units of the fire brigade attended the scene.

However, smouldering animal feed reignited on Wednesday night and two fire brigade pumps were continuing to pour water into the warehouse last night.

R&H Hall is Ireland's biggest importer and supplier of animal feed ingredients. Six weeks ago, a fire at the company's storage facilities in Cork city caused extensive damage.

Garda technical experts were waiting to examine the scene to determine the cause of the blaze but added that it was too early to make any assumptions.

Toxic sludge dumped on road

Monaghan County Council environment crews were called yesterday to deal with a large consignment of toxic sludge which was dumped on a roadway at Latton near Ballybay.

The sludge was the result of a huge diesel laundering operation along the Border.

Smugglers used special chemicals to remove colouring from the fuel so that it could be sold at a higher commercial price.

A county council spokesman said approximately 9,000 litres of the sludge had been dumped in containers and there were fears of local contamination and pollution if the substance reached waterways.

The council has already spent over €1 million removing similar sludge from roads over the last 18 months.
