Attempted murder charge after NI crash

A 33-year-old man is expected to appear at Belfast Magistrates Court this morning charged with attempted murder, dangerous driving, failing to stop for police and evasion of customs duty.

It is understood the charges relate to an incident involving a lorry in west Belfast on Friday.

The lorry was being chased by PSNI officers thought to be investigating an alleged fuel smuggling ring when it hit a police vehicle and a car in which a man was sitting with his two teenagers.

The lorry came to a halt in the St James's Park Area near the Falls Road at around 3pm after its tyres were shot at by PSNI officers. The man and two teenagers were not seriously injured.

The Police Ombudsman's Office is investigating the incident.

PSNI releases former spy

Former British army spy Kevin Fulton has been released without charge by PSNI officers investigating two murders in 1990.

Mr Fulton was arrested in south-east England on Wednesday by members of the PSNI Special Crime Investigations Unit.

He was brought to the North for questioning about the murders of Eoin Morley and British army soldier, Ranger Cyril Smith.

The murders were carried out by the Provisional IRA in Newry in 1990 during Fulton's time as a double agent.

Wicklow curate dies in car crash

A curate in south Wicklow Fr Vincent McDonald (81), was killed in a car crash last Friday.

The crash happened at about 5pm on the main Carlow-Kilkenny road and involved Fr McDonald's car and a van.He was curate in Kilquiggan near Shillelagh and was very popular in the community.
