Man (73) dies in Kilkenny house fire

The man who died in a house fire yesterday in south Co Kilkenny was Thomas Delahunty (73), who lived at Main Street, Mullinavat.

Gardaí were alerted at around 4.45am yesterday. A patrol car went to the scene but gardaí were unable to alert the occupant, and forced the front door.

They tried to enter a bedroom but were forced back by smoke.

A postmortem examination was later carried out.

Tesco store for Cashel rejected

Plans by the UK retailer Tesco for a superstore in Cashel, Co Tipperary, have been turned down by An Bord Pleanála.

South Tipperary County Council had granted permission with conditions attached for the store at Windmill and Spafield, but the decision was appealed to the planning board by the small shop owners' association, RGDATA.

An inspector from An Bord Pleanála recommended Tesco be refused permission to go ahead with the store because of its remote location from Cashel centre and the extent of car parking proposed would have an adverse impact on the town centre.

'Luas' network plan for Galway

Plans for a Luas-type network for Galway have been finalised and are to be forwarded to the city council and Department of Transport, writes Michelle McDonagh.

The proposed 28km (17.4 mile) Corrib Light Rail would link Knocknacarra to Oranmore and Eyre Square to Moycullen.

New newspaper for Limerick

The first edition of a new weekly newspaper in Limerick will be printed today.

The managing director of the Independent Free Newspapers (Ireland) Group, Declan Dooley, said The Limerick Independent would face stiff competition from the Limerick Post but would be a different type of operation.

Mayo sculpture park reopens

A sculpture park in the Co Mayo town of Kiltimagh, which was attacked by vandals last year, will reopen this evening.

In May last year, vandals used sledgehammers to destroy three sculptures. Locals have since contributed to a local draw to help raise the funds needed to restore and repair the sculptures.
