Woman is charged over Cork death

A woman (35) was last night charged at the Bridewell Garda station in Cork in connection with the death of a man originally from Uzbekistan (39) who died at Cork University Hospital on Saturday.

The woman was charged with assault causing serious harm to Abduazim Sulaymanov at Pinewood, Ballinlough Road, Cork, on December 31st and will appear before Cork District Court this morning.

Pedestrian hit by car in Derry dies

A woman has died after she was hit by a car in Co Derry. Nicola Ward (30), from Cornshell Fields in Derry city, was walking along Ballykelly Road in Limavady on Thursday night when the accident happened.

A police spokeswoman said Ms Ward died on Saturday night as a result of her injuries.

Shooting in north Dublin suburb

Gardaí in Coolock are investigating a shooting in a north Dublin suburb on Saturday night.

A shot was fired at the front door of a house at Riverside Drive, Clonshaugh, at 10pm. The house was occupied at the time but nobody was injured.

Gardaí believe that the culprit ran from the scene to a nearby park where he was picked up by a car.

In a separate incident on the south of the city yesterday, gardaí seized two firearms and a quantity of ammunition. The seizure was made in a planned search of a house in Clondalkin yesterday.

A sub-machine gun, a semi-automatic shotgun and about 30 shotgun cartridges were found hidden in the back garden of the house at Greenfort Lawns.

Three face court over extortion

Three men appeared in Belfast Magistrates Court on Saturday in relation to a police investigation into extortion by loyalists in east Antrim.

Two were accused of blackmail and terrorist funding and the other with having a gun and bullets in suspicious circumstances.

Colville Hogsett (41), Sullatober Square in Carrickfergus, and Gary William James Riddell (25), Oakwood Road in the town, were both accused of blackmail and demanding £10,000 from a man in the Carrickfergus area.

George Campbell Kennedy (39), the Hollies, also in Carrickfergus, was charged with having a pistol and five rounds of ammunition in suspicious circumstances.

The men were remanded in custody to appear in court again on January 18th.

The extortion being investigated by the PSNI is thought to be linked with the loyalist paramilitary Ulster Defence Association.

Arrested for attempted murder

A 37-year-old man is expected to appear in court in Co Derry this morning charged with attempted murder.

It is understood the charges relate to a domestic- type incident in Curran Road, Coleraine, on Saturday morning in which a 30-year-old woman was stabbed. She has since been released from hospital.

Minister welcomes tourism figures

The Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism has described 2006 as a landmark year for tourism. John O'Donoghue noted that CSO figures for overseas visitor numbers and revenue for the first three quarters of the year showed an increase of 11 per cent over the same period in 2005.

New dean of St Fin Barre's

The Church of Ireland Bishop of Cork, the Right Rev Paul Colton, has appointed the Very Rev Nigel Dunne, who is currently rector of Bandon Union of parishes, as the new dean of St Fin Barre's cathedral, Cork.
