Elderly man killed in Co Donegal crash

An elderly man was killed in a road crash in Co Donegal yesterday.

Gardaí said a car and a lorry collided, resulting in the death of the 93-year-old driver of the car. The driver of the lorry received minor injuries, and both were taken to Letterkenny hospital.

Gardaí in Ballybofey are seeking witness to the crash which happened at 3.30pm at Drumkeen on the Letterkenny to Ballybofey road.

Peacekeepers in Liberia to return

The last group of 100 Irish soldiers who have helped to stabilise war-torn Liberia are due to return home.

The troops were due home last November but prolonged their mission for a further six months at the request of former UN general secretary Kofi Annan.

This will mark the end of the Defence Forces' involvement with the United Nations Mission in Liberia.

Blanchardstown shooting appeal

Gardaí at Blanchardstown in Co Dublin were last night continuing to appeal for information in relation to a shooting in the west Dublin suburb on Sunday during which a 25-year-old man was seriously injured.

The man remained in a critical condition in Connolly Memorial Hospital last night following the shooting at a house in Fortlawn Park, Blanchardstown.

A man called to the house at about 5.30am and shot his victim in the neck before escaping on a motorcycle.

Reopening of Derry airport

The City of Derry Airport was due to reopen from midnight last night after regulatory officials approved new passenger safety measures.

An audit of safety standards at the Northern Ireland aerodrome has been completed and inspectors from the Civil Aviation Authority are satisfied with remedial work carried out.

The airport was closed last Thursday after CAA officials found unsatisfactory repairs to a parking area for planes and no effective bird control plan.

Call for clean-up of 1798 grave

Calls are being made for a local authority to clean up the grave of a leading participant in the 1798 rebellion.

Local woman Nancy Kavanagh has called for the grave of Fr Michael Murphy, in Castle Ellis, close to the villages of Blackwater and Oulart, to be maintained.

Fine Gael councillor Oliver Walsh said he plans to take up the matter with Wexford County Council.
