Man held captive in failed robbery
Gardaí have appealed for witnesses after a man (29) was held at gunpoint in Dublin on Friday in a failed attempt to rob a security van.
A spokesman for the Garda press office said the man was taken from his home at Gateway Mews, Ballymun, and held for the day, "in an attempt to steal money from a security van".
The man was released unharmed on Friday evening in Dunshoughly, Co Dublin. No money was stolen. Anyone with information is asked to contact Ballymun Garda station on 01-6664400.
Order to decide priest's future
Bishop Joseph Duffy of Clogher has said that convicted priest Fr Jeremiah McGrath (63), who was sentenced to five years imprisonment in Liverpool last week on child sexual offences, "will have his future decided by his order when the judicial process has been ended".
Bishop Duffy said Fr McGrath's "own order in Kiltegan, Co Kerry, will decide his future".
Man charged with importing heroin
Edward Farrell, of Morning Star Hostel, Smithfield, Dublin, was charged at a special sitting of Enniscorthy District Court on Saturday with importing heroin at Rosslare harbour, Co Wexford.
Farrell (32) was remanded in custody to appear before Cloverhill Court next Friday. He was arrested after the discovery in his car of 10.6kg of heroin with an estimated street value of €2.12 million.
Gardaí seize heroin in Clontarf
Gardaí from Dublin's north central drugs unit have arrested one man and seized a quantity of heroin with an estimated street value of €200,000.
The man was arrested on Saturday in Clontarf.
Labour's election performance
A report on Labour's disappointing election performance is to be compiled following a meeting of party activists in Dublin at the weekend, writes Paul Cullen.
General secretary Mike Allen is to deliver the report to the parliamentary party later this month on the meeting, which was attended by directors of elections, candidates and some of the party's 20 TDs.
Gardaí help to deliver baby
Three gardaí went beyond the call of duty when they delivered a premature baby over the weekend.
Gardaí Mary Farrell, Catherine Rennick and Brian Dolan were asked to escort the car bringing Audrey McMahon from her home in Laytown, Co Meath, to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.
When her mother flashed the car's headlights, the three gardaí stopped and went to the car, where they quickly delivered the baby.
The baby is now in a special unit at the hospital.
Marilyn Monroe brolly for museum
An umbrella used by Marilyn Monroe for a career-defining photo shoot has been sold to the the Museum of Style Icons in Kildare for about €32,000.
The museum's owner, William Doyle, bought the polka-dot umbrella at the annual Julien's summer auction in Beverly Hills on Saturday night.
