Redmond jury resumes today

The jury in George Redmond's corruption trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court has retired to a hotel for the night before they resume their deliberations tomorrow.

Judge Joseph Matthews dismissed the jury of three women and eight men for the night on day 17 of the trial after they had deliberated for four hours.

Mr Redmond (83) of College Gate, Castleknock, has pleaded not guilty to two charges arising out of a compulsory purchase order on 167 acres of land at Buzzardstown and Coolmine, in northwest Dublin when he was employed as an assistant county manager.

He denies receiving £10,000 from Mr Dunne on a date between October 10th, 1985, and June 26th, 1989, as an inducement in respect of the compulsory purchase order (CPO) and to receiving the money "as a reward for showing favour to another" in relation to the same land.

Law student charged with fraud and rape over fake doctor claim

A 31-year-old law student who allegedly posed as a doctor and carried out invasive procedures on a woman who was ill was remanded in custody when he appeared before Dublin District Court yesterday, writes Eithne Donnellan.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is alleged to have carried out the procedures on his former girlfriend in 2006. He now faces a total of 12 charges including charges of rape, assault, endangerment, theft and fraud.

The woman alleges that in the summer of 2006 when she felt unwell she was told by a Dublin clinic to see a doctor.

She told gardaí her boyfriend said there was no need to go to a doctor as he was a medic and could treat her himself. It is alleged he prescribed her antibiotics and also carried out invasive procedures.

The woman, who contacted gardaí after she discovered he did not work in hospitals where he claimed to work, has since been diagnosed with cancer.

The student was arrested yesterday and was remanded in custody to appear on May 29th.
