Murderer fails to overturn conviction
A Dublin man has lost his court attempt to overturn his conviction for the murder of his former partner's boyfriend.
The Court of Criminal Appeal yesterday dismissed the appeal by Gerard McKeever against his conviction for the murder of Glen Dunne (31), at Bawnlea Drive, Tallaght, on November 11th, 2001. Counsel for McKeever, Erwan Mill-Arden SC, argued the conviction was unsafe because the trial judge had not explained the law relating to the defence of provocation or had not defined manslaughter when instructing the jury.
Gerard Clarke SC, for the DPP, said the judge had perfectly adequately and sufficiently directed the jury.
Youths jailed for Dart assault
Three teenagers who attacked a 27-year-old man on the Dart have been given two-year prison sentences by Judge Katherine Delahunt at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
Three of the youths had been drinking and they and another teenager attacked Michael Quill.
Three were sentenced to two years' detention but Judge Delahunt suspended the last 18 months. The other youth's sentence was adjourned to a later date.
The four - who were all 16 at the time - pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to Mr Quill on September 8th, 2003.
Drug addict jailed for robberies
A drug addict who was jailed for eight years last March has been given another five-year sentence for armed robberies and a bank raid in Co Kildare.
Keith Meehan (28), Fernwood Park, Tallaght, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to his role in a raid on Allied Irish Bank in Celbridge and three robberies of shops in Kill, Co Kildare, in 2004, and three robberies of shops in Dublin in 2005.
Man with cocaine jailed for 10 years
A man caught transporting cocaine valued €280,000 and holding €56,500 worth of amphetamines has been jailed for 10 years at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
Andrew Kearns (28), Rathcoole, Co Dublin, pleaded guilty to possession of the drugs.
