Four years for bringing drugs into prison

A man who smuggled heroin into Limerick prison has been sentence to four months in jail. Kenneth Graham (38), Caherdavin, Limerick, was caught passing two bags of heroin to his brother in prison last year, Limerick District Court heard.

Judge Tom O'Donnell postponed the start of the sentence for two weeks because of family circumstances.

Man jailed for breach of bail

A man whom gardaí believe is a leader of the Real IRA was back in custody last night after breaching bail conditions.

The Special Criminal Court ordered that Joseph Clarke be remanded in custody after hearing that he had been seen twice in the company of men convicted of subversive offences, a breach of his bail.

Clarke (36), Santry Avenue, Dublin, was charged in January with membership of the IRA.

Man punched baby (7 months)

A man who punched a seven-month-old baby with his closed fist has pleaded guilty to two counts of cruelty to children on September 15th, 2005. He will be sentenced on July 12th.

Peter Forde (26), Wellington Road, Cork, was visiting the child's mother in Cork city when the incident occurred. Forde has admitted hitting the child.

Judge Timothy Lucey at Cork District Court heard that Forde went into the bedroom and punched the child, who had been crying. The baby was taken to South Infirmary hospital and gardaí were alerted.

Jailed for ramming Garda patrol cars

A man who rammed a stolen van into two Garda patrol cars following a "kamikaze" chase over the Dublin Mountains has been sentenced to three years by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Judge Katherine Delahunt suspended the final year of Stephen Moorehouse's sentence and imposed a concurrent two years for burglaries he later committed in Rathfarnham.

Moorehouse (19), Bray, Co Wicklow, had 39 previous convictions. He pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment and car theft in Rathfarnham and Bray on February 2nd, 2005.

Man jailed for attack on landlady

An English man who attacked his landlady, locked her out of her home and put cooking oil and a toaster on a lit cooker while her three- year-old daughter slept upstairs has been jailed for two years by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Darren Hassal (25) of no fixed abode was sentenced last March by Judge Katherine Delahunt to two years for assaults on gardaí, criminal damage and production of a knife at Pineview Grove, Tallaght, in June 2005.

He chose to go to trial on a count of reckless endangerment. He pleaded guilty and yesterday received a further two years.

Settlement in car crash action

A woman who suffered multiple severe injuries in a car crash has settled her High Court action for damages. The settlement was not disclosed.

Pauline Hartigan (27), Castleconnell, Co Limerick, had sued Country Clean Recycling arising out of a collision at Gooig, Limerick, on June 27th, 2003. It was claimed a truck owned by the defendant collided with the rear of her car.
